Thinking about retirement? Quinn’s change to health care costs
Sorry for another piece of doom and gloom…but, this is something you should know about proposed changes to retirees’ health care costs. Currently, the state negotiates our health benefits with AFSCME. Recently, the Governor has taken the position that although many of these retirees were unionized, the state is no longer obligated to bargain changes in their health care benefits. See the proposed changes in the article below. What is particularly disturbing is the potential effect of these changes on those individuals who retired with health benefits as part of an incentive package.

State retiree health premiums ‘totally unaffordable,’ AFSCME says

Almost one-third of Illinois’ 79,800 retired state government employees, most of whom pay no monthly premiums for health insurance, would have to fork out between $290 and $500 a month to keep their coverage as part of Gov. Pat Quinn’s fiscal 2011 budget proposal.
And retirees’ cost for insuring many of their 31,000 dependents would rise by $75 to $430 a month.
