Hi ef.
I am the president of the NEIU UPI chapter and a member of the bargaining team. The vote should not affect your day to day life as a student at this time. The UPI bargaining team wants to return to negotiations immediately. We will negotiate anytime, anywhere and with whomever the administration seats at the table. It is time to bring these negotiations to an end. President Hahs was told on Friday that we wanted to continue to bargain.

A strike is an option to consider but it is not the only one that faculty and staff are evaluating. We will continue to release information to the NEIU UPI website and we will answer questions as time permits.

Hi John,
Thanks for your comments. I am the NEIU UPI chapter president. The UPI bargaining team is ready to return to negotiations immediately. It was clear during the UPI meetings this week that members expect a fair and equitable contract that leaves no member behind. The membership will no longer accommodate administrative delays. The UPI team stands ready to return to negotiations this week. As the faculty and staff did in 2004, we will negotiate anytime, anywhere and with whomever the administration seats at the table. It is time to bring these negotiations to an end.

Throughout the history of labor the strength of a union and the outcome of contract negotiations have been dependent upon the collective actions of union members. Right now we are determining what actions the members will take to move the negotiations to a successful end. A strike is one of several options the members are considering. Each option is weighed against how it may affect students' progress toward graduation. In our discussion of next steps it is clear that none of us what this continuing struggle to harm our students. By the way, the majority of full- and part-time faculty are part of the union and their employment is covered by the contract.

What does this mean to the NEIU community? I stand behind the staff\professors at all costs. I have been to meetings and marched on campus.

I believe that NEIU is educating a large population of future teachers and the current circumstances set a great example of things to come... But, as students, we are in the dark! What does this vote mean to us?

I have heard professors say that the UPI is too unorganized to pull-off an official strike. I have also heard that a union strike is just around the corner.

Please help the STUDENTS of NEIU understand what is in their future as STUDENTS. I believe that the majority of the student population supports the efforts and commitments of the UPI.

How would a strike affect graduating seniors this Spring? As far as I know I am taught by part-time professors, one is an online class the other is student teaching. I don't believe they are in the union.

I am support of your struggle however. Northeastern's administration is really bad. I bet most people don't know that they actually proposed a "free speech zone" a few years back!

http://thefire.org/article/10050.html

The teachers at Northeastern are good, the people that work in the offices however are incompetent. Bad advice from an academic adviser almost cost me a year due to the deadlines for student teaching applications. They should fire some of those incompetents and pay the professors better.
